In ancient Rome, a man was an absolute patriarch; he could even sell his kids into slavery if they didn't "measure up." This is the one "reward" offered to men who may otherwise deprived by unfair economic circumstances. <BR/><BR/>Unfortunately, the backlash against gay marriage plays on this. Marriage is described by Maggie Gallagher and others as an "institution" that enforces a birthright of a child for a mother and father. But the "institution" is predicated on perks and on the subordination of or at least deferenece from those who do not take advantage of the legal institution (until now, outside of MA, including gays).
